Welcome to Canada! You've made the big decision to immigrate or travel to Canada and... surprise! You've arrived in the middle of winter. ❄️ Maybe you're from a warm country and snow is a first for you. Or maybe you've experienced winters before, but never as cold as those in Canada. Don't panic! In this article, I'm going to give you all the tips you need to survive - and even enjoy - your first Canadian winter.

1. What can you expect when you arrive in winter?

Canada is known for its harsh winters. Depending on where you land, temperatures can vary enormously. Here's a general idea:

🌡 Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa 10°C to -30°C with snow and freezing rain
🌨 Quebec City, Winnipeg Temperature range: -20°C to -40°C (serious stuff!)
🌬 Vancouver Much milder, around 0°C to 5°C, but with rain

The cold here is sometimes accompanied by a wind factorThis means that the wind makes the perceived temperature even lower. For example, if it's -15°C, the wind can make it feel like -25°C! It stings, but with the right preparation, you'll be fine.

2. How to dress for a Canadian winter?

If you want to survive your first winter, clothes are the key ! You can't just throw on a sweater and hope that's enough. Here's the golden rule : clothing in layers!

1️⃣ The base layer Wear: Thermal clothing or a wool or polyester sweater to keep warm. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture.
2️⃣ The second layer (mid layer) A warm wool or fleece sweater to insulate your body.
3️⃣ The outer layer A waterproof, windproof winter coat.

🚨 Don't neglect the accessories!

  • Hat or tuque (keep your head warm)
  • Gloves or mittens (mittens keep in more heat)
  • Scarf or neck warmer (to prevent the cold from seeping in)
  • Non-slip insulated winter boots (sidewalks are often icy)

Tip: If you arrive without winter clothes, don't panic! Wait until you get to Canada to buy what you need. You'll find great bargains in stores like Walmart, Decathlon, Canadian Tire or Winners.

3. Getting around in winter

The Canadian winter makes getting around a little more complicated. Here are a few tips:

🚗 By car :

  • Make sure your car is equipped with winter tires (mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15).
  • Clear the snow from your car before driving, otherwise you risk a fine.
  • Beware of ice ! It can be invisible but very slippery.

🚌 By public transport :

  • Allow extra time, as buses and trains may be delayed due to snow.
  • Dress warmly, as waiting outside at -20°C is no picnic.

🚶 On foot :

  • Walk carefully to avoid slipping on the ice (Canadians are becoming experts at "walking on ice" 😆).
  • Wear boots with a good grip.

4. How to survive the cold, dark days?

One of the greatest challenges of winter is not only the cold, but also the lack of light. Here are a few tips to help you get through the season:

☀️ Get out in the sunshine Natural light helps keep your spirits up.
🍵 Drink hot beverages Tea, hot chocolate, soup... anything to warm up!
🏃‍♂️ Get some exercise Sport helps combat fatigue and winter blues.
💡 Buy a light therapy lamp It mimics sunlight and can help combat seasonal depression.

5. Enjoying the Canadian winter: it's possible!

Winter isn't just cold and snow, it's also a magical season! Here are a few activities to make the most of it:

🎿 Ski and snowboard : If you like thrills, go to a ski resort.
🛷 Tube sliding A super-fun activity to enjoy with family and friends.
Ice skating : There are outdoor skating rinks everywhere, and they're often free!
🎆 Winter Carnival As the Québec Winter Carnivalone of the world's biggest winter festivals.

And of course, nothing beats a nice warm evening with hot chocolate and a movie. 🍿

6. Final tips before arriving

Before landing in the middle of winter, here are a few final recommendations:

✔️ Moisturize your skin Cold air dries out the skin, so use a moisturizing cream.
✔️ Adopt the Canadian way of life Winter is part of everyday life here, so make the most of it!
✔️ Be mentally prepared Winter is long, but it also has its beautiful sides.

And above all, remember: Millions of Canadians survive winter every year... and you can too! 💪
